What Is the Sleeping Shaq Meme?

Sleeping Shaq is a two-panel image with a large blank white area on the left and two pictures of Shaquille O’Neal stacked on the right. In the top picture, Shaq has his eyes closed, with the words “i sleep” near the bottom. In the lower picture, his face is brightly edited with glowing eyes and the words “real shit.” The contrast turns a dismissive response into an intense reaction: the first thing is ignored, while the second gets full attention.

Where the Meme Comes From

The template uses images of basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, with a heavily edited version of his face in the lower panel. It circulated online as a reaction meme, with the “i sleep” and “real shit” captions becoming its familiar format. The exact original post and date are not firmly established, so the meme is best understood as an internet image macro that spread through social media and meme communities.

How to Use the Template

Use the two text boxes to set up a contrast, from the ignored choice to the one that gets a strong reaction:

1. I sleep: Name the dull, unwanted, or unconvincing thing. For example, “Going out on a weeknight.”
2. Real shit: Name the thing that suddenly gets Shaq’s attention. For example, “Getting invited to stay in and order food.”

Keep each caption short enough to read at a glance. The contrast is the joke, so make the second choice feel like a clear upgrade.

Make It a Video Meme

For a short video, keep the top image calm and let the lower image’s glow or brightness pulse subtly as Shaq reacts to the second caption. Clips longer than 10 seconds get more reach on X, and you can make the video right on this page.
