What Is the Is This a Butterfly? Meme?

The image shows an animated man with glasses holding out one hand toward a yellow butterfly. He looks at it and asks, “Is this a butterfly?” The meme pairs a mistaken identification with a question, often for jokes about misunderstanding something, getting a detail wrong, or confidently assigning the wrong name to a person, object, or idea.

It is also searched as the butterfly identification meme or is this a pigeon meme.

Where the Meme Comes From

The image is from the Japanese anime series *The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird*. It shows the android Yutaro Katori, who is learning about human life and mistakes a butterfly for a pigeon in the original scene. The screenshot spread online as a reaction meme in the 2010s, with the question and labels adapted to different situations.

How to Use the Template

The three text areas label the thing being mistaken, the incorrect identification, and the person making the mistake.

1. Thing being identified: Put the actual subject or situation here, such as “A normal Tuesday.”
2. Wrong label: Add the mistaken name or interpretation, such as “A personal attack.”
3. Question: Write the speaker’s confused question, such as “Is this drama?”

The classic version puts the subject near the butterfly, the mistaken label near the hand or person, and the question with the character. Keep each phrase short so the mix-up is clear.
